For this project I created design materials to be utilized by the band's "American Bollywood" 2023 Summer Tour. Materials created were tour poster, t-shirt design, and ticket stub design.

The Band

Young the Giant is an American Rock band formed in 2004 in Irvine California. The design of their promotional materials and album covers has shifted from surrealist geometrical designs to South Asian symbolism with dreamlike qualities. Their 'American Bollywood' album released in 2022, is their most recent work that informed my initial design research.

Symbolism

Within the album cover itself, and the music video "acts", each symbol on the corners of the album carry significance to the song's narrative and cultural backgrounds of the musicians. Researching their use of the symbolism in music videos, their meaning when juxtaposed to song lyrics, and how they all relate were my first points of consideration.

Establishing a Visual Identity

A split complementary color scheme utilizing colors featured on their album and fonts consistent with the band's genre were my first considerations. Due to the prominence of the symbols in the album cover, I decided to focus on how they could be incorporated in a single uniform illustration with their symbolic meaning in tact.

Lotus Flower

The lotus flower symbolizes purity, enlightenment, and rebirth. It grows in muddy waters but emerges clean and beautiful, representing the journey of overcoming obstacles and achieving inner peace.

Mandala Portal

Mandalas are symmetrical designs synonymous with Indian culture. The circular shape represents the universe and interconnectedness. Each element has symbolic meaning, making mandalas a powerful visual.

Tree of Life

The Tree of Life is a significant symbol in Indian culture, representing the interconnectedness of all living things. It symbolizes growth, renewal, and continuity.

Sun Symbol

The sun is highly significant in South Asian culture and religion, symbolizing power, enlightenment, and life-giving energy. The sun's symbolism is also evident in South Asian art, literature, and architecture.
